In order to expand students’ international vision and cultivate talents to enhance their international competitiveness, the light and chemical engineering major of our college particularly invited Professor Luyi Sun of the University of Connecticut to visit our college during " University Immersion Program(UIP)" at Sichuan University. From July 9 to 12, 2018, a full English course, Polymer Processing, was offered for light and chemical engineering undergraduates.
Professor Luyi Sun, with his outstanding engineering background, used commonly seen objects in life with the combination of video materials taken in the factory, vividly explained to students the various processing methods of polymer: such as extrusion, injection, blow molding, calendering, moulding, electrostatic spinning and 3D printing, etc. A $1 bottle of mineral water, which we might throw away after drinking, is a good teaching material for Professor Sun. He explained how to choose the raw materials of the mineral water bottle, how to design the size and thickness of the bottle, how to choose the proper processing method, how to get the screw thread on the bottle cap and the bottle body, and what to pay attention to in the process of processing. While students bemoan on the numerous knowledge of the little plastic bottle, they also deepen the understanding of various processing methods.
Through the " University Immersion Program(UIP)", Polymer Processing course, the light and chemical engineering students in our college have a deeper understanding of the polymer processing methods, and their English learning ability has been improved to a certain extent. The opening of international courses also enhances international understanding and communication between schools and students which promotes the interdisciplinary integration, and weakens the boundaries between teaching and research. For this, we’ve built a good exchange platform for students to learn about overseas professional courses and studying aboard.
